One of the more surprising things to discover about Rhode Island Free Clinic is the diversity of our patient population of 1,610 English and non-English speaking people. We see men and women of all races and religions. We see young adults and their elders. We see the disadvantaged and the not-so-disadvantaged. Contrary to what you may think, 44% of the patients we see are employed. Some work for small companies with few employees. Some work part-time. Some are self-employed. Some are artists. All share one thing in common: their current circumstances prevent them from qualifying for either employer-funded or government-funded health insurance and the cost to purchase it is beyond their present means. Without us, they would have nowhere else to turn for basic medical care. Devenez patient de la Rhode Island Free Clinic |
Isidro R.
Patient since 2003
Age 33
Factory worker with diabetes and no health insurance
Isidro is young and single and working--but doesn't quite qualify for employee health benefits. He doesn't have a wife or children under age 18, so he doesn't qualify for RIte Care. His income doesn't fall within Medicaid guidelines and he doesn't make enough to afford the extra $300+ a month for health insurance. Yet, Isidro has a serious case of diabetes that he needs help managing. He's a perfect example of someone who has greatly benefited from the nurse practitioners, diabetes educators, endocrinologists, and nutritionists who volunteer at the Free Clinic--someone whose wellbeing isn't getting wedged between a rock and a hard place.
