Corporations/Foundations
One of our greatest pleasures has been discovering that Rhode Island is full of compassionate people, many of whom work for some of the state’s largest organizations. Rhode Island Free Clinic has received wonderful support from the corporate and foundation communities, including Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Citizens Bank, The Rhode Island Foundation and The Corporation for National and Community Service:
- Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island developed a unique one-year partnership with the Free Clinic beginning October 2005. This partnership helped recruit new volunteers, recognize current volunteers, and financially support clinic operations. It was launched with a $10,000 gift in honor of three long-time Free Clinic volunteers and continued with media support and additional gifts based on volunteer hours served throughout the year.
- Citizens Bank named the Free Clinic a “Community Champion” for our work on behalf of the uninsured of Rhode Island. Their $25,000 donation allowed us to purchase computers and medical supplies for the clinic, and pay operating expenses. Their award also included volunteers and media support.
- The Rhode Island Foundation awarded us a two-year, $50,000 grant, which is helping to create and implement an electronic database for the first time. This database will enable us to coordinate our volunteer efforts more efficiently, keep accurate records of the patients we serve, and advocate more effectively for the uninsured by capturing a more accurate picture of who they are.
- The Corporation for National and Community Service placed three full-time VISTA volunteers at the Free Clinic this year. One is a clinic coordinator who recruits, orients, and schedules volunteers to help us care for the uninsured. Another is a media relations coordinator who maintains media contacts and promotes the work of the Free Clinic to the community. The last VISTA is a research coordinator, who will organize and implement our transition into new technical programs like Electronic Health Records.
